7 Keys to creating quality organization-wide education
KEY ONE: Commitment and Support
This is a commitment at all levels of the organization. Excellence needs more than senior level support, it needs senior management’s involvement in creating and sustaining the organization’s educational direction, performance, and focus. This includes the development of a strategic process that ties education into the overall business plan of the organization.
KEY TWO: Needs Assessment and Analysis
Excellence requires that there is a system developed for identifying and analyzing educational needs that relate to the organizations overall strategic plan. If the program is intended for internal organizational use then it is important to know how the organization structures long-term education and professional development by using a needs assessment. If the program is intended for external use – you had better know your market very well if you want to be competitive.
KEY THREE: Planning and Performance Projection
Based upon your needs assessments and analysis, develop measurable short and long-term educational goals with performance projections of key education results that tie into the overall business strategy. If you have not already done so at this point be sure to develop a realistic budget to support your project.
KEY FOUR: Content and Design
Develop a system that will collect the appropriate subject matter content and support a consistent work flow process. There are various formats and delivery models from which to choose. Developing clear course learning objectives, when done first and properly will guide you in selecting the appropriate subject matter expert (SME), the course design, and the most effective delivery method. This is a critical point to insure the content matches any special requirement such as license or certification standards, CEU’s or ILU’s.
KEY FIVE: Marketing and Promotion
Note that we use two action words here, marketing and promotion. If the program is intended for internal organizational use then be sure that your marketing plan relates to the needs assessment of your staff and clients. If the program is intended for external use then be sure that your education marketing plan is included as part of your overall organization plan. Many associations neglect the promotion of individual courses or programs. You can have the world’s best SME, course, delivery format, at the right price but if your audience doesn’t know about it – it will fail. Those that rely on the reputation and marketing of the organization will fail in their education efforts without adequate promotion and advertisement of your courses or education products. Budget accordingly.
KEY SIX: Implementation and Delivery
Follow your implementation and delivery action plan. Be patient and give it time. On an organizational level think in terms of a process that may take 2- 3 years to see real results. Your needs assessment and analysis (Key 3), planning and performance projection (Key 4) will provide you with a direction and a path. At the course level, keep a close eye on the competition and your profession or trade. The entire world of continuing education and professional education has changed in the past several years. Don't be afraid to try the new and the different. Stay as current of technology as your budget will reasonably allow. Be prepared for continual change and adjust accordingly. Plan on it!
KEY SEVEN: Evaluation and Improvement
All outstanding programs include an evaluation and feedback process. Build a system that continual evaluates the operational work flow process each year. Set up a system that will evaluate each course, service or product against (Key 3) measurable short and long-term educational goals with performance projections. Most of all don’t let this valuable information collect dust. Use it to continually improve, build your reputation as a quality organization, and become more profitable.
